The following information is provided as a general guide to some of the terms used in the descriptions provided by the belt manufacturers. However, it is worth noting that manufacturers interpretation, and therefore their descriptions or terminology may vary. Nubuck is top-grain cattle rawhide leather that has been sanded or buffed on the grain side, or outside, to give a slight nap of short protein fibres, producing a velvet-like surface. Although Nubuck is similar to suede it differs from suede in that it created from the inner side of a hide whereas Nubuck is created from the outer side of a hide Embossed Leather has typically been "stamped" with a design or artificial texture under very high pressure. This is used, for example, to create imitation alligator hide or snake skin effect. Full Grain Leather has not been altered beyond hair removal. Full grain leather is the most genuine type of leather, as it retains all of the original texture and markings of the original hide. Natural Grain is a leather that displays its original grain. Split Leather is made from the lower layers of a hide that have been split away from the upper, or grain, layers. Suede is Split Leather that has been buffed and brushed to create a fuzzy surface feel. Top Grain Leather is where the top layers have been left intact, in contrast to Split Leather which is made from the lower layers. Distressed Leather is an effect created by applying layers of similar or contrasting dyes to a piece of leather in order to create a mottled or aged appearance. Antiqued Leather is dyed with one color over another, usually darker over lighter, in order to create rich highlights and an artificial aged appearance. Can also be called called Distressed Leather. Bonded Leather is man made and produced by using leather fibres and bonding them with a latex binder. Without close inspection, it is difficult to tell the difference between Bonded Leather and 100% leather. However, whilst it is arguably less durable and long lasting than 100% leather, this is typical reflected in the much lower retail price. Coated Leather describes leather with a surface coating, typically, but not always, a vinyl which is glued to the leather. This comes with a condition that the coating or layering should not exceed one third of the total thickness of the product, alternatively it should not be more than 0.15mm. If the surface appearance of coated leather is shiny, it is commonly referred to as Patent Leather, although it would be more accurate to describe it as Coated Patent Leather. Many prefer things made of coated leather because it provides the opportunity to offer a wider choice of colours, styles and fashions. Patent Leather begins as a superior grade of fine grain leather that undergoes a process to achieve the glossy look. Originally, this was accomplished by applying layers of a linseed oil finish to the leather, gradually creating the sleek appearance. Later, the invention of plastics changed the methods for producing Patent Leather. The development of synthetic resins has further simplified the process and cut production costs considerably, making the mass production and wider use of patent leather possible. |
